The NWLA Cultural Center is pleased to announce a very special installment of our popular Language of Food Series on Saturday, February 16th, 2013, with Celebrate Brazil! If you are unfamiliar, this unique event series explores cuisines and cultures from around the world, and the ways in which they maintain an unbroken relationship with traditions of the past. For the first time, NWLA is now expanding the Language of Food event for a weeklong exploration of all things Brazil. “Today’s Brazil,” a Fireside Chat with Vicki Robin, Charlie Murphy & Friends.
Wednesday, February 13th, from 6:30-8:30pm
Come benefit from Robin’s decade of immersion in the mosaic of modern Brazil, from leading ecotourism trips to presenting at the Instituto Visao Futuro and World Social Forum. Along with fellow educator and activist Charlie Murphy, Robin will lead a discussion rich in information and provocative ideas about social innovation and what can be learned from the multiplicity of cultures coexisting in today’s Brazil. Brazilian refreshments will be available for purchase.
A donation on a sliding scale from $25-$15 is suggested at the door.
Facilitator Biography: Vicki Robin
Vicki Robin is a prolific social innovator, writer and speaker. She is coauthor with Joe Dominguez of the international best-seller, Your Money or Your Life: Transforming Your Relationship With Money and Achieving Financial Independence (Viking Penguin, 1992, 1998, 2008). It was an instant NY Times best seller in 1992 and is now available in eleven languages. Vicki has lectured widely and appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows, including “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Good Morning America” and National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition” and “Morning Edition”; she has also been featured in well over 100 magazines including People Magazine, AARP, The Wall Street Journal, Woman’s Day, Newsweek, Utne Magazine and the New York Times. Vicki has helped launch many sustainability initiatives including: The New Road Map Foundation, The Simplicity Forum, The Turning Tide Coalition, Sustainable Seattle, The Center for a New American Dream, Transition Whidbey and more.
Facilitator Biography: Charlie Murphy
Charlie Murphy (CEO and Co-Founder of PYE, Partners for Youth Empowerment) is renowned for his group facilitation and program design work integrating the arts into youth development. He is also an award-winning singer/songwriter. He was elected into the Ashoka Fellowship in 2005. Charlie leads PYE’s international efforts to spread the Creative Community Model and has been training facilitators, launching youth camps and working with company’s in Brazil for the past 3 years.
