Sarah Rodden- German

My name is Sarah Rodden and I’m a senior at South Whidbey High School. I was an exchange student last year in Austria; I lived with a host family and went to a local high school there and was fully immersed in German. Something that I found very interesting about the Austrian culture was the importance of family. My host family and I would always have three meals a day together and special brunches on the weekends that we would prepare together. Also my host grandmother lived very near and would come over at least three times a week for things as little as an afternoon coffee or a meal.  I was also very humbled at my host family’s immediate warmth and acceptance of me into their family and always making me feel welcome. It truly feels like I have another family on the other side of the world. I was interested in leading the german chat group because I thought it would be a good way to keep up my skills with the language and help other people with what I’ve learned!

Jack Fackerell- Hebrew

Hebrew is an ancient and rich language  of more than three thousand years which is spoken in modern Israel today!  I have studied Hebrew since I was five years old. Later I took courses in the language at the University of Washington and at Ulpan Etzion in Jerusalem. I was fortunate to live in Israel for a few years and to teach in the Negev desert.  I received my Masters in Jewish Education and  at the heart of those studies were courses in Hebrew literature and traditional texts. I am still a student of Hebrew language and I very much feel privileged to share the language with others who enjoy learning it! I am grateful to the Northwest Language Academy for  the opportunity to  practice Hebrew language.
