Belly Dance Workshop and Hafla
Beautiful Basics: Finesse from the First Steps
On Saturday, Dec. 4th, from 3:00pm – 5:00pm, Alimah Helming, headliner for the Evening in Marrakesh event, will return to Whidbey Island to present a very special belly dance workshop. Using correct body alignment and colorful imagery, Alimah will have you dancing from fingertip to toe, exploring exotic use of arms, hands, undulations, and shimmies. You will learn travel steps, small combinations and concepts to tie your new movements together. All levels welcome.
Alimah has been dancing since 2001 and has won numerous awards, including Belly Dance National Champion 2009, Shimmilicious Soloist Champion 2009, and Lillies of the Valley Professional Winner 2008. She was featured as the cover dancer for Jareeda Magazine, and as Centerfold Dancer for The Belly Dancer Magazine. She resides in Seattle where she teaches workshops, private lessons and continues to perform.
Cost: $35. Reserve early! Call 360-321-2101
Hafla and Pot Luck
At 6:00pm, following the belly dance workshop, the NWLA Cultural Center will host a “hafla”, which in Arabic literally means “party”! Traditionally, this is a time for women to relax, enjoy each other’s company, and express themselves through shared performance of dance. We invite women and girls, with or without dance experience, to participate in this unique and empowering event. Did you attend our recent Moroccan culinary class or do you have a few Middle Eastern dishes in your repertoire? Fabulous! Bring on the baba ganoush and tangines! There is no fee to attend, but reservations are required, and donations will be gladly accepted.
For participants of the Belly Dance Workshop and/or Hafla, we can offer various possibilities for an overnight stay. Everything from dorm-style, “bring your own sleeping bag” accommodations, to shared rooms, to luxury Jacuzzi suites. The choice is yours and prices vary accordingly.
